My oldest grand daughter was recently promoted from kindergarten to first grade. What we both have leaned this past year is a strategy for reading. She memorized certain site words and is still learning sounds and blends of letters. What I have determined is repeated exposure to words will improve her comprehension of what she is reading. Our pattern of learning is:
1. practice repeating sounds
2. phonics sounds of letters
3. vocabulary words, words like would, their and which aren't easy to sound and can't be taught with pictures.
So by recognizing individual sounds and identifying words while listening to phoneme sequence she is reading and getting better each day. She is a jewel and I am happy I can be a part of her leaning experience. She enjoys going to the library to choose books she likes to read. She especially likes to read to her dad.
